The Antarctic Dream, was built by Dutch shipyards for the Chilean Navy as an Antarctic passenger ship. It has been completely conditioned and remodelled in 2003 for elegant and comfortable exploration of the Southern Oceans in any weather conditions.
Uniquely among all the ships that take tours to the Antarctic, the “Antarctic Dream” carries a turbine helicopter on every expedition. The helicopter is used not only for safety but also to make special expeditions to see places inaccessible by other means. We also carry zodiacs (rubber boats) to explore the accessible shores.
It is equipped with state of the art navigation and has an outstanding record of service, including countless missions and journeys to Antarctica and Patagonia. It is run on ecological methods, fulfilling all the Antarctic restrictions on the deposit of chemical, mechanical and human waste. This is because there is no natural bio-degradation in this area.
The ship is built and decorated along traditional lines to give you a sense of history combined with tremendous comfort. Nevertheless, their main purpose is to spend as much time as possible outside the vessel, whether walking, sailing or exploring. When it comes to places with no access, we may use the helicopter. Otherwise we count on our safe, reliable zodiacs. Additionally for your comfort and leisure, the "Antarctic Dream" has available a complete library, closed circuit television, lecture hall, gymnasium, sauna, and a beauty salon.
Personnel and Scientists
The vessel relies on carefully selected and trained staff who will be glad to help you and attend to your needs in the warm, friendly atmosphere provided by them and the crew members. One of their major purposes is to have you join our expedition leaders, invited scientists and staff at informal conferences, panel discussions, programmed lectures, etc. that will educate guests by including such topics as the local animals, plants and geographic diversity. Their scientists have been chosen on the basis of their knowledge and experience, but also for their care for and commitment to Antarctica and Patagonia.
Crew is managed by the captain and other specialized professionals. In all 40 persons, included our invited scientists.
Helicopter
They plan to make good use of the helicopter and safety is our most important concern. Please remember that they cannot guarantee any specific flights - and that all decisions are ultimately up to the Captain and pilots. This is a ship''s decision. A mandatory briefing will be held before the first helicopter excursion.
They maintain a detailed log of helicopter time for the program and plan excursions accordingly. In fairness to everyone, passengers will be divided into groups and the order of disembarkation rotated. Whilst not everyone may get to fly on a given day because of changing weather and time constraints, we will do our best to make sure that the time balances out over the duration of the expedition.
